EDUCATING THE YOUNG
MONROVIA, LIBERIA
April 2018 to present
Problem
36 Ebola-surviving children do not have the means of attending school. Note: even though school is free in Liberia, the costs of the required school uniforms and other various fees make school attendance prohibitive for many.
Solution
L'Amim is paying school fees and providing uniforms for these 36 Ebola-surviving children who only have one parent still living or lost both parents and are now being taken care of by a surviving parent, another family member, or a kind-hearted neighbor.
Better Solution
Assist parents/guardians of these children to get in a position where they can take care of themselves, their children, and eventually assist others in a similar way.
FEEDING THE YOUNG
MONROVIA, LIBERIA
April 2018 to present
Problem
Many children who lost one or both of their parents do not get a proper meal each day and go hungry.
Solution
We provide 46 Ebola-surviving children to a healthy lunch--the only meal many will have that day.
Better Solution
Assist parents/guardians of these children to get in a position where they can take care of themselves, their children, and eventually assist others in a similar way.
EDUCATING YOUNG ADULTS
MONROVIA, LIBERIA
October 2018 to present
Problem
Young Adults cannot afford to attend Higher Education
Solution
Sponsored three young adults--Yekelyn, Prince, and Janet to attend university/technical schools. Yekelyn and Janet to Nursing School, and Prince to Information Technology School--these individuals give back to their communities by teaching the Adult Literacy Program.
Better Solution
Assist parents/guardians of these youths to get in a position where they can take care of themselves, their children, and eventually assist others in a similar way.
ADULT'S LITERACY PROGRAM
MONROVIA, LIBERIA
July 2019 - Present
Problem
Most parents/guardians of the 36 sponsored Ebola-surviving children cannot read and write--especially women. Additionally, many other adults in the community are also illiterate.
Solution
An adult literacy program is now in place--required attendance for parents/guardians whose children are sponsored in the education program. Note: this program is taught by the three young adults being sponsored for higher education in addition to the few parents/guardians who are literate--it is their way of giving back.
Better Solution
Enact a skill-building program so these parents and guardians will be able to provide for themselves, their families, and able to assist others in a like-manner in which they were helped.
LIGHT STAR OF JESUS ORPHANAGE, INC.
RAIKAI DISTRICT, UGANDA
October 2019 - Present
Problem
81 orphans hosted in four homes of widows who volunteered to allow them to stay with them, sleeping in overcrowded conditions.
Attending non-official school in a temporary dilapidated mud structure--the guardian of these children can not afford for them to attend government schools.
Food and water are hard to come by. Food--obtained mostly by begging to community members, and water--reached by walking up to an hour each way to a pond that supplies dirty water.
No electricity for nighttime security, to get around safely during hours of darkness, or to conduct necessary functions--dressing, homework, etc.--after the sun has gone down.
Progress
Purchased land and built a dormitory and school that meets the immediate needs.
A water tank has been installed along with gutters to direct rainwater into it. Additionally, a water filter was purchased to purge all drinking water of impurities; the deadly typhoid disease has been contained for these children.
The orphanage along with the school is now a legal entity.
Solar panels have been installed to give minimum lighting.
Solution
Build larger dormitories and permanent school buildings.
Installing a water well and additional holding tanks for water.
Obtaining funds to install Electricity supplied by the local government authority.
ADOLESCENT GIRLS AT GLORY OF CHRIST ORPHANAGE
RAIKAI DISTRICT, UGANDA
August 2019 to present
Problem
135 adolescent orphan girls missing school during their monthly menstruation cycles because they don't have proper sanitary napkins.
Solution
Washable/reusable pads. We Initiated a program where materials were supplied so the girls can start making their own sanitary napkins. Contributions still needed so that a total of 543 napkins can be made. This will give each girl 4 sanitary pads.
Please note: it is not practical for disposable sanitary napkins to be supplied as it is not efficient to ship them such a long way, or to continually purchase them locally for one-time use, and there is not an adequate method of disposing of them.
Better Solution
Donations to buy a foot-operated sewing machine; this will enable the orphans not just to make better quality sanitary pads, but allow them to sell excess and thus supplement the food for the orphanage.
GLORY OF CHRIST ORPHANAGE
RAIKAI DISTRICT, UGANDA
August 2019 to present
Problem
Over 400 orphans do not have enough food to eat--some days, they do not eat at all.
Solution
Put initiatives in place so not only will they be able to eat regular meals now, but to enable self-sufficiency for long-term independent provisioning.
Better Solutions
1. Land purchase - enable to stop paying rents and grow crops for food supply.
2. Buy dairy cows - they provide milk for healthy nutrition, and the dung produced can be used as a fertilizer for crops.
3. Animal/bird rearing - chickens, sheep, goats, etc. for the production of milk, eggs, meat, etc.

CLEAN WATER FOR DRINKING
After
An upgraded Water System
Water tanks at this orphanage were re-positioned, gutters installed to direct the water runoff from the roofs into the tanks. This now allows the tanks to be filled in the rainy seasons, so when the dry season comes, there will be enough water so these children will have clean water right at their facility; no longer long walks to get dirty water for consumption.
